The second largest city of the Scandinavian countries, Copenhagen has a distinctly European friendly feel with attractions and sights to suit every taste and interest. The city has a history that dates back to 1043 and is full of history and museums to visit. The most popular tourist and famous attractions are the 100 year old amusement park Tivoli Gardens, the statute of The Little Mermaid and Christiansborg Palace.
The inspiration behind the Disney Theme Parks, Tivoli Gardens was founded in 1843 and has become a national treasure, as well as an international attraction. Tivoli Gardens is full of beautiful architecture, historic buildings and lush gardens as well as amusements like hall of mirrors, rollercoasters, open-air-theatres and a wealth of restaurants and cafes to choose from. Tivoli Gardens is centrally located, only a short walk from City Hall and close to Copenhagen Central Station making it very accessible.
The Little Mermaid
The sculpture of the Little Mermaid is one of Copenhagen’s most famous tourist attractions and is the official emblem of Copenhagen. Created by Edward Eriksen, and given as a gift to Copenhagen city by Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen, the bronze sculpture is based on Hans Christian Anderson’s most famous fairy tale the Little Mermaid. Located on the waterfront The Little Mermaid welcomes travellers and natives to Copenhagen Harbour.
Located on the tiny island of Slotsholmen the Danish seat of government is truly spectacular and a must see for any visitors. Christianborg Palace is more than 800 years old and is home to the Parliament, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Supreme Court. The Royal House also still uses several parts of the palace. The majority of the palace is open to the public, including the recently discovered ruins of the bishop’s castle and the medieval fortress.
